How Long Do Hearing Aids Last And When Is It Time To Upgrade?

Sep 2, 2025 | Hearing Aids

Hearing aids can be a substantial investment. There are several elements that can impact the number of years of you will get with your hearing aids. When hearing aids are worn faithfully, we estimate 4- 6 years of use.

Consider these factors:

HANDLING AND CARE

Taking proper care of your ears and your hearing aids can help extend their life. Visually inspect your hearing aids daily and care for them as you were instructed by your provider. Ensure that your ears are cleaned regularly if you tend to build up a lot of ear wax or have an oiler complexion. Bring your hearing aids in for inspection and professional cleaning on a regular basis as advised by your provider. Be sure to use a dryer or dehumidifier if advised.

BATTERIES

The type of battery can influence longevity. Hearing aids that use a traditional, replaceable battery will most likely have a longer run. This style is more susceptible to moisture damage. A rechargeable battery will need replacement and from our estimate can last 2-6 years. If the battery is replaced out of warranty, you will be looking at a substantial repair cost. The upside is that a rechargeable hearing aid typically has more moisture resistance. If you have purchased an over-the-counter device, check with the manufacturer regarding the impact of moisture.

STYLE

The form factor can impact longevity. With any hearing aid, you are inserting electronics into a dark and moist environment. A hearing aid that is custom molded in your ear may need more servicing from the manufacturer. For other styles that rest behind the ear, it is easier to replace parts without sending the hearing aid to the manufacturer for service.

YOUR ABILITY

Has your hearing changed? Has your lifestyle changed? Do you find yourself in more challenging environments? Make sure that the way you hear speech in noise has been measured.

UPGRADING

Technology keeps improving. If your hearing aids are 3 years or older and you wish that you could hear better, get reevaluated. Your ability to hear in noise is one significant factor tied to performance, and this is one feature that has greatly improved. Adding accessories to help with television, hearing on the phone, or conversations in general can also be explored.
