Earlier this month I was lucky enough to snag tickets to see the Foo Fighters at Wrigley Field. Sitting in the upper deck, my jaw dropped watching how many people were not wearing ear protection.
I know that many of you reading this think about the spongy foam plugs that muffle sounds when inserted. Those will work, but they are not optimal for hearing music and speech. Do yourself a favor and get a pair of musicians earplugs.
You can buy local. Sensaphonics in Chicago creates custom ear protection that is long lasting and comfortable. Custom plugs require a visit to the audiologist for ear impressions. Your audiologist may have a lab that they prefer as well.
There are tried and true over the counter earplugs designed by Etymotic Research out of Elk Grove Village. These are sold on line, in music stores and in Audiology practices. Westone Labs also offer a non custom solution that comes packaged with 2 sizes of sleeves for an optimum fit.
And a word to the wise….before inserting anything into your ears, have them checked for wax. If your ears need to be cleaned, take care of that first.
Listen up and be smart. If you protect your ears today, you’ll have them for tomorrow.
